Moutain Buggy Versus Out N About Double

By: willson

If you need an off-road double buggy then you might have come across the Out n About Nipper Double and the Mountain Buggy twin. These twin buggies come from well known companies, known for their sturdy and well designed all terrain pushchairs, however do they cope with the extra load of two children and which one offers the best value for money?

The Mountain Buggy double is definitely the most flexibleof the pair. It can be used as a pram, pushchair, or travel system, for both or one of your babies. To use the pushchair as a pram you can just attach one or two carrycot units to the chassis, or their rather fabulous double carrycot. Or you can just recline the seat units to a flatposition for a young baby- giving you great flexibility, which the Nipper Double can't match, with only reclining seat units; although you can adda newborn cocoon to keep small babies comfy. However, this versatility doesn't come without a price. The carrycot units need to be purchased separately and for two babies this does increase the cost significantly, particularly as the Mountain Buggy is already the more expensive of the two.

When it comes topractical features, its virtually impossible to choose between the Out n About Doubleand the Mountain Buggy double. Most importantly for a double buggy, both are narrow enough to comfortably fit through a normal door frame. Both have durable and sturdy aluminium chassis although there is a big weight difference between them - at 10kg the Nipper Double is very light for a double pushchairand over 6kg lighter than the Mountain Buggy; ideal if you have to carry your pram upstairs, or on an off public transport.

When it comes to their off road abilities the two models are well matched - despite the lighter weight of the Out n About Nipper Double. As you would expect from all terrain pushchair specialists they give a smooth ride over even very bumpy ground - strong suspension, chunky tyres and their three wheel design ensure this. But, with the front wheels in swivel mode you also get great manoeuvrability as well, making it easy to negotiate small spaces with both models.

Really it's difficult to pick a winner from the two, they both work well off-road and offer a comfy ride. But if you're planning to use your pushchair a lot, for long periods of time then it may well be worth investing in the Mountain Buggy Double, which offers more flexible modes and can be used right up to 5 years - giving you everything you need right from birth.

I have a small car with decent boot space (peugeot 206) know I want a travel system, prefer baby to face me . . .

what is good at the moment? Don’t worry, my mum is buying – family tradition!

Hi, I am not a mum but work with pushchairs most of the time and have done for years for a reputable company.

Obviously everybodys everyday needs are different and the reccommendations wont be the same for everyone.

I personally love the Quinny Buzz pushchair. Its stylish and easy to use. Check out the Mothercare Website for pics etc.

Its a fantastic 3wheeler and perfect for walking through the woods or general town/city. The seat unit isnt suitable until they are 6mths but you can buy the carrycot that will last up until then and the child will be comfortably lying flat facing you, you can also buy a car seat/infant carrier by Maxi Cosi, voted best car seat company, which will aslo face towards you.

When the child is old enough to go into the seat unit you have the option of either having the child facing towards you or outwards(to be honest they get a little nosey and love to see whats going on in the world)at the same time having your child occasionally facing you helps the baby with social skills and creates more of a bond.

Anyway Im not gonna preach, all I can say is shop around, get the shops to try the pushchair in your boot, and also get them to check the carseat. If you want to use a car seat with a travelsystem you need to make sure it fits safely.
You would be surprised alot of people have to base the travel system around the carseat!!!!

Another pushchair that comes to mind is the Maclaren Techno XLR -again check it out on the mothercare website, they have loads of choices, and also the majority of the stores have the facility to try both the car seat and pushchair in your car aswell as give you a demonstration.

Good Luck

p.s also check out the Bugaboo Bee which is retailed at around £320, you will need to buy the nest (carrycot) but it is sooo lightweight and small, you will have room for everything else in your boot too, believe me its worth a look.
