Wisconsin Janesville Travel
Sun, 25 Jul 2010 21:59:55 +0100The writings on Abraham Lincoln are almost too considerable to calculate, thus testifying to his endurance as historical personage, iconic hero and the source of curiosity for endless researchers.
The 16th President tops the list of most influential – and most revered – Americans. Lincoln’s legacy is most alive in our continuous search for freedom, equality, and opportunity. In Wisconsin, tourists may celebrate Lincoln by visiting Janesville’s award-winning historic house museum where he stayed.
Abraham Lincoln-Tallman House
Known as the Lincoln-Tallman House, this fine specimen Italian villa-style mansion hosted Abraham Lincoln as a guest in 1859. Built between 1855 and 1857, the Lincoln-Tallman House is operated by the Rock County Historical Society; the house contains over 75% original furnishings and illustrates upper class life during the mid-to-late 1800's. Scrupulous attention to detail and careful replication of the era is evident in each of the 26 rooms. Visotors are allowed to tour all of the building’s five levels, from the basement to the cupola.
I don’t know if this is an option for you, but I had two friends who lived out in Janesville and just had their ceremony and reception in Milwaukee… but most of their family lived in Milwaukee so it wasn’t a huge issue.
Check the hotels especially! Best Western, Baymont, the Hampton Inn… yes, they’re considered ‘value’ (read: cheap) hotels but they DO typically have conference and rental rooms that a few curtains from ‘Canopies’ and some lighting can really make dazzling. (I’m not sure if ‘Canopies’ will come out to Janesville, but definitely check it out!)
There’s also a place called ‘Best Events Banquets’ that can seat a max of 400 people. I thought there was a golf course out there… isn’t there? See if their clubhouse has a rental space!
If that’s not enough for you, check out other towns that are close to you. If you can’t find something IN Janesville, maybe you could find something a few minutes away.
ETA: I think the botanical gardens she was talking about might Boerner Botanical Gardens and those are in the Hales Corners area. (A suburb of Milwaukee. It’s close to the border, so it may be officially listed in Glendale or Franklin… all three villages kind of converge there in Whitnall Park.) It’s right by my mom’s house. If you DO decide to have the reception there, they have EXCELLENT photo ops all around the park!
